i just found this review of spiders and thought it was absolutely CORRECT! - apart from the drinks prices, theyve gone up a little now..

Spiders Nightclub was first opened in 1979, and has resisted much modernisation since. Privately owned by a local Hull couple, the club always has and always will be a haven for all the kids who never quite "fit in" at school. Nestled in amongst the factories and warehouses of Hull, away from the town center, never advertised in the city, Spiders remains largely cocooned in a certain mystique that keeps the usual Saturday night crowd away.

Its saturday night, another busy week over. Shower, shave, preen. You pull on your clothes. Who are you, and what do you wear? Jeans? Skate shorts? Leather, flares, PVC, lace, gothic, punk, indie, hippy, mod... It really doesnt matter who you are or what you stand for. Its a ritual, a mass of Hulls alternative scene making a pilgrimage across the city. Leave the house, catch a bus. A long walk. Queuing up outside the ugly black metal and concrete building. The smell of smoke and marijuana in the air. A car drives past the queue, playing loud dance music. An obscenity is shouted at the crowd. The crowd just laughs. This is our turf, our home, and for once, you are in the majority.

Spiders has never used any flyers, posters or gimicks to attract its members. It really doesnt need to. Spiders has become a small local legend - either a place to respect and enjoy, or a haven for druggies and weirdoes; depending on which side of the line you fall. Its a nightclub in the real sense of the word: its a members-only club. The only way in is with a membership card, or to be a valid guest of an existing member. As the only club not playing dance on a Saturday night in the city, it keeps itself to itself, and the members keep the atmosphere close and protected.

Youre at the front of the queue now. The bouncer has just turned away two Ben Shermanites. They shuffle off back towards the city center, already wasted. You show your membership card, hand over your entry fee to a smiling goth, and enter the club. The heat surrounds you, smoke is thick in the air, and a thumping metal soundtrack assails your ears. Pushing through the crowd of half-familiar faces, you reach the Black Widows bar. A group of cute giggling girlie skaters are flirting with a punk with a pink mohican. A bartender with a lip piercing makes your drink. Its green and bubbling ominously in its pint glass. You hand over your money and find some friends in the crowd of outcasts.

Spiders plays a mix of punk, metal, indie and rock. Their musical policy is simple: They take house, garage, hip-hop and trance, then say, if you like this kind of music -- Spiders is not for you. Upstairs they play a mix of funk, soul and classic alternative tracks. The whole club sound system is run from a pair of CD walkmen and a twenty year old set of speakers. It gives the music a distinctive sound. The crowd doesnt mind, though - its their music, and its being played by them, for them, very loudly.

More drinks! Youre already feeling a bit drunk, and now someone has come up with some drinking game. You check your wallet. Amazingly, you seem to have spent next to nothing. The music crackles and thumps in the background. You start dancing, probably badly, but no-one cares. Everyone is different here, yet youre all the same. A slampit is started; people are bouncing along. You can feel your shirt plastered to your body with sweat. Time for more drinks, and a trip outside.

Spiders has some legendary drinks, and a price list that makes the students heart sing. A night out at Spiders is dirt cheap. You can get there, have enough drink to be suitably merry, a post-clubbing burger and a taxi home, and still have change from a twenty!
Labatts lager, Blackthorn and Boddingtons are all £1.20 a pint, spirits are 45p a shot. Mixers add between 10 and 50 pence. Bottles and cans are £1.20. Unlike many clubs, the prices are the same at every bar, all night.

Youre outside in an open courtyard area, sat on a metal beam. Its cold and raining, but its so hot inside that youre glad. A so-called friend hands you a drink. Its in a half-pint glass, its green, and smells very sweet indeed. You take a sip. Its strong. Good God, what the hell is in there?! A bouncer walks past. The smell of pot is heavy in the air, a joint is making its way towards you. Its one A.M. Where did the night go? You sip your cocktail, and your brain starts to leak out of your ear.

Spiders also sells a number of shocking cocktails. These range from strong to very strong to painful. As well as being incredibly potent, they are also laughably cheap.

If you manage to drink your way through that little lot, youre a braver and stronger man (or woman) than I. In addition, you would only have spent £16.70, and would quite probably be in need of a stomach pump.

Its two A.M. Youre drunk and happy, soaking wet and tired. Youve danced, skanked and thrashed to indie, ska and metal. You still have a tenner in your wallet, and a huge alcohol-induced grin on your face. You and your friends pile out the rapidly-emptying club, while a little old lady collects glasses. You visit a little burger van for some food youll regret later, and bundle yourself into a taxi.




Its been another Saturday night at Spiders.
Youll do it all again next week, because thats what you do.
Its like a home from home.

I agree with ftcoming, its same old same old.

but where else can you whip upstairs for a slice of toast

its RUBBISH. full of kids. yer ok its about a quid for a vodka coke. ... a vodka coke the size of your eye in a plastic cup.

and its dirty. music is always the same and ridiculously dated, theyre playing the same stuff now that they did 5 years ago.

Ok so I absolutely used to LOVE this place……….when I was 15 but now its just turning into a joke….

Heres the beef I’ve got with the place….

- You come home from Spiders not looking like you’ve been out at a club but looking like you’ve just hiked across the Himalayas with a Black substance ALL over your legs AND whatever shoes you wer wearing………..the floor is really THAT gross

- TOILETS- Ok, this is where you DEFINITELY know that the owner of Spiders MUST be male….I mean, come on, the place is filled with 300+ girls on a Saturday night and only has 7 toilets…….you do the math, I’ve never been so close to pissing myself in that queue in my whole life, I’ve honestly considered getting a taxi home to take a slash and coming back………it really IS that bad…


- You cant walk 10feet in the place without having your own drink spilt on you, which is ridiculous for me as I only drink Tyzers, which happen to be red so if I wear anything light coloured not only do I come home looking like I’ve been hiking but also look like I’ve murdered someone with red stains all over me


- TOILET MIRRORS- every Girl needs to top up her make-up or check whether she still looks half sober during a night out but this is IMPOSSIBLE in spiders, with 300+ girls and 2 mirrors the size of my computer monitor….topping up your make up in there is like witnessing 50 Ethiopians fighting over a Sunday Dinner………its every girl for herself

- JUST DON’T WANNA SEE THAT- you just cant go to spiders without seeing 2 fatties ‘getting it on’ a bit TOO obviously in either one of the cages or a dark corner somewhere…… get a room, not only is it revolting but also a bit hypnotizing at the same time as watching these fatties grinding against eachother can be rather like watching a lavalamp……….you just cant stop watching. GROSS


Apart from that I do like the place and all my friends still insist on going EVERY week and having both worked AND played there I think I’m entitled to this opinion! Sorry Spiders, I love you really

used to go to spiders all the time, good laugh if theres a group of you out. had many awesome nights in spiders..really cheap aswell which helps!

I absolutely love spiders. The drinks are cheap and delish, the music is excellent varied and loud and the people are freindly and huggable.
Whether your there to meet freinds, get wasted on a budget or to just groove around spiders is the place for you.

The only problem that I can think of is that for me and lots of other people its hard to get to but I now get a taxi every week so problem solved.

As it says on their website, dont go if you expect to listen to some rnb rap or cheesy music as part of their policy is to not play that sort of music(also dont go dressed in trendy clothes as they will not let you in). They dont play as much indie as Id like but then other clubs dont rock as hard.

Spiders is my new place to rock out to my hearts content.
Its got peter the pirates seal of approval.
