Having never even heard of either of the bands, I was nonetheless looking forward to a good bit of rock and a fair amount of beer in the mighty Haworth. As we arrived in the function room above the Haworth I began to worry about 2 potential problems, firstly the very small serving hatch, at which a number of people were already wedged into as they clamered for alcohol... and secondly the size of the venue made me sceptical as to how good the sound quality was going to be...
To my relief the highly efficient bar staff kept the flow of revellers moving and I found no problem getting served. Also to my surprise the Violets ripped into their first songs with the ease of a drunken 1st year student finding the gutter...and the sound quality...superb. I was impressed with the balance the band acheived between truely playing their music to the maximum volume for our listening pleasure and not getting that annoying crackly, feedback noise that so often ruins gigs in smaller venues. I enjoyed all the Violets own music, but they unfortunately disapointed with a weak cover of a Beatles song, the name of which, due to alcoholics memory has forsaken me..
A pint or 6 later and I was watching a very swift change of set and personnel, which occurred with mesmerising ease before my eyes and it was Jokerz turn to impress...
and impress they did.
With an almighty smash of the drums and surprisingly mellow, reflective lyrics they were off... The sound was very clean and unique, in that it sounded like any good rock band should (a testament to this being, a group of fans were swiftly up on their feet and doing what pissed rockers do best...trying to dance!), refreshingly, the band managed to acheive this without sounding like somebody else.
The 3 piece band shelled out a great group of songs which, im sure, the alcohol did nothing to harm my appreciation of and I would advise anybody with a taste for a good bit of rock music to check them both these bands out at a local venue or on the net as Im sure they have a myspazz page or their own website
cheers
