I could tell from the line up that that this Tuesday at the Sesh was going to be a good one, but with such a massive attendance last week, it was going to be hard to top. Another deliciously warm summers eve does tend to badger a few more out than usual and once again crowds were spilling out into the front terrace and as i drove into the car park i saw the same splillage taking place around the back, although it was still early at only 9.30.

First on the bill was John Copley. I remember John from years ago when i used to be a regular at Adelphi's open mic night and he'd play religiously every week spinning his own versions of Damien Rice and a few of his own, he was fantastic and I went back again and again every week. That must have been a good 3 or 4 years ago now and John has certainly come a long way since his open mic days.

John Copley started off the night just right as he eased the crowd in with the sound of his folk like guitar and stop starts that all suit his voice perfectly. For those who've not yet heard the sounds of John Copley, I can only describe him as Hulls answer to Paulo Nutini but a thousand times better with each song packed with clever lyrics chruned out in one amazing voice that not once bares a flicker as he conquers every high note, its no wonder a crowd soon formed around him at the Linnet.

He performs with extreame concentration, professionalism and doesn't let the audience distract him for a second as he belts out love song after love song, you can see it in his eyes that he means every word coming out of his mouth. It makes you wonder who, if anybody he's singing about and with a voice like that I'm sure every girl in the room was wishing it was them.

With the aid of a tuba & shaker player for a few tracks, John played a fantastic set, finishing with his take on, 'When Doves Cry' by Prince. Now usually i hate it when bands and artists do cover songs, it's usually a big no no. The rule is (well in my opinion) to never do a cover of a good song, because you run the risk of wrecking it, unless your going to perform and awesome version of it unlike the original and putting your own spin on the bugger. Luckily John Copley did the latter and performed a fantastic version which then found itself turning into Tom Jones', 'Kiss'! I don't even like Tom Jones but John put such a good spin on it i found myself smiling the whole way through.A top notch performace from John Copley and i was thrilled when he said he'd be making an appearance on the acoustic stage at The Big Day In at Piper on Sunday.

Next up were Kid ID, this was the second time they'd played at The Sesh after previously supporting Fonda 500 on their last visit and after a brilliant set last time around I was keen to see them again.
Kid ID are a 6 piece ska, funk band from Leeds with bags full of energy. I'd compare them to Sublime with more of a folk, Drum & Bass tinge. Braces, Hats, Tamborines, Trombones, Trumpets and Samba drums just to paint the picture. With the 3 main vocalists performing some fantastic harmonies inbetween their bopping ska beats with the Trombone player giving it 100% just like he did the first time they were at The Sesh. Bouncing, bare feet and sweating like fuck! And he always looks like he's having a right good old prat around when he's performing, smiling and enjoying every minute whilst sneaking a quick swig of Carlsberg inbetween songs. In fact I'm pretty sure he was wearing the same 3 1/4 length trousers and shirt he did the last time around, you'd have thought he's of at least changed for his 2nd appearance! But, clothes aside he's probably the only guy that makes playing the tamborine look good and the energy that comes off all 6 of them definately leaks into the audience as it wasn't long before they were bopping on their feet too. It could have been the, 'Best dancer gets a free CD' promotion that did it.
Kid ID certainly know how to please a crowd and they're seriously a pleasure to watch, a lot of fun and as Mak said, 'probably our favourite out of town band in the past 5 years', I certainly agree and even bought myself a copy of their CD to listen to on the drive home, a bargain at just a fiver for 12 tracks.
It's certainly no wonder that these guys have bagged a slot at the years Reading and Leeds festival, and i'll be looking forward to seeing them perform again on the Sunday.

Headlining The Sesh tonight were Someone & The Somethings, a personal favourite of mine and I'm sure the same can be said for many others. Someone & The Somethings are an 8 piece Soul, Blues, Funk band from Hull with some fantastically funky songs under their belt. Think saxaphone, trumpet, seriously low bass notes, funk guitar and belting voices.
This wasn't their first time at The Sesh, Mak tries to get them in when he can because he knows what type of a performance they can put on and a night with Someone & The Somethings is guaranteed to get the audience on their feet. If the sight and sound of the band bopping and hitting those low notes doesn't get you in the funky mood then there's seriously something up with you.
The two main female vocalists on the night were spot on as always, hitting every note perfectly and bopping away to their own music. Its always good to see a band enjoying what they're doing and you can certainly tell that Someone and the Somethings fucking love it!
As expected the crowd were on their feet and dancing away and even though i was bogged down with my camera that weighs about 10 ton I couldn't help getting a little dance in.
Every song was tight, energetic and every band member put in 100% to their performance.
The band did seem like they needed a little more room to stretch in and probably deserve a much bigger stage then the one they were on but hey, what can you do? They were the headline band, the stage can't get any bigger and everyone around was dancing, good times all round. The band finished their set with some old time favourites, Jackson 5 ‘I want you back’, and my favourite, their Ghostbusters cover, which is just bloody brilliant!
Someone and the Somethings offer something to suit the taste of everyones musical pallet, there's not one person who wouldn't enjoy there performance no matter what type of music your into, whatever age, Someone and the Somethings are contagious and hopefully soon we'll be seeing them on the much bigger stage that they deserve. If you haven't yet seen them, it's highly reccomended, in fact they're playing at The Big Day In at Piper this Sunday!
