This month I stumbled upon a new myspace profile, and loved the music from
the very first note. It did start to intrigue me somewhat, it was brilliant but I couldn't shake of the feeling that it sounded very familiar for some reason. Suddenly the answer hit me, but it took another half hour of switching between the page and that of another bands and even a quick phone call to Purple Worm Records before I let myself get my hopes up. Man Made Noise, for those who are slow to catch on like me, is ex-Ernest frontman, Terence James Dunn's new solo project. Eschewing the band dynamic and picking up all the parts himself.

Lead Balloon, sounds like Dunn channeling Elliot Smith from beyond the grave mixed with a quinitsental english vibe reminiscent of Badly Drawn Boys "About a boy" soundtrack, with it's glockenspiel ticklings and his cryptic lyrical turns of phrases that sees him singing "You had a little plastic pony hidden in your room, I took a match to it's mane just to smell the fumes"
A Drawer (which also appears on the Purple Worm album sampler) is an understated acoustic driven affair showcasing the strength and depth of Dunn's vocals while 'One Gallon Drum' picks up the prog torch left by Ernest and sprints with it, a funk bassline with electronic bleeps. Throughout the demo there are definite Eels influence, with a hint of sadness and introspection in Dunn's voice. It conjures up the image all the songs on his own, having to start all over again after the demise of Ernest. Which is probably bollocks as he's always the life of the party when I've met him, but why let that stand in the way of such an excellent image! It's the closest we will get to new Ernest material, yet stunningly brilliant in it's own right.
