You might not yet have heard of Liberty Stands and if not I assure you it won’t be for long.

The four little gobshites from Hull (East Hull might I add) made their debut appearance at The Sesh this Tuesday, sandwiched in between a flaky performance by The Ruperts and an electric set from headliners The James Dean Syndrome.
The lads have been gigging for just a few months now and have made their way on to the Hull circuit by bagging gigs at The Lamp, Mugwump at Sharkeys and now The Sesh.
Now for most bands making their debut appearance at The Linnet expectations are usually on a bit of a low, no one expects you to be much good and you usually get the opening slot early on.
Things couldn’t have been more different for Liberty Stands. The summer evening had attracted more than just the regulars and there were plenty of fresh faces around enjoying the facilities of an outdoor beer garden on this one of few su
mmer evenings.
mmer evenings.Liberty Stands had bagged the middle slot, which in some cases is usually better than headlining as a lot of people have either lost interest, have gone to Grapevine at Attic or are too pissed by the time the last band are about to come on.
This was the bands debut appearance at The Sesh and you could smell the sheer scent of excitement as they ran of stage like a bunch of over excited puppies, with a ‘Come on then!, Lets do it!’. Front man Craig pouncing on stage whilst bassist Dan giving it his best Rock n Roll moves.
The crowd clapping and whistling as they jumped into their first tune, they’d brought a fair few with them.
I’d only previously heard Liberty Stands in the rehearsal room, and I can tell you that there’s nothing atmospheric about being in the backroom of Adelphi covered in fag ends and empty beer cans but despite the raw surroundings I could hear for myself that Liberty Stands had a few decent songs under their belt and I was here to see for myself if they were just as confident on stage.

Their sound was tight and well rehearsed, you certainly wouldn’t have guessed that they’d only been going a few months; it was as if the Hull scene had them locked in cupboard for the past 6 months and they’d only just been let out again. Not afraid to prance around stage, interact with the crowd and really give it 100%.
With tunes ranging from Indie/Rock with a slight Emo-ish twist, each as catchy as the last. Essence of Motley Crew to even Coheed and Cambria to My Chemical Romance spring to mind. They play their next song, ‘Smoke your life away’ ironically while Mak sparks up another sly one from behind the DJ booth and as the set went on, the crowd got rowdier and rowdier, dancing along while front man Craig joins them in the audience Dave Cardinal style.
Another catchy little number was. ‘Rat Race’, slow tempered at first until Scott let rip on guitar and the tune really kicked in, and for a skinny ‘un he ‘aint half bad! I felt like I already knew the words to this one and I’m sure I didn’t.
After an exciting set of fresh new tunes, songs dedicated to baby nieces and a lively audience ,
they finished with a new one (not that the crowd exactly knew the previous 5 they’d played already). And so what if the crowd was mainly filled with friends and family, they made a great atmosphere and everyone has to start somewhere don’t you think? You’d feel a bit done in if you were playing at The Sesh and your mates didn’t even bother turning up so good on ‘em for bringing along such a following.

They played a fantastic debut set at The Sesh and I’m sure that Mak’ll be booking them in again very soon. They’re a great set of lads that whilst having a laugh with they’re music, they’re still producing some great tunes and entertaining an audience, I’m sure this is only the beginning of Liberty Stands now all they need to do is record some bloody decent demos and get them up on their MySpace and in the Mp3 Chart, I’m sure it’ll do them justice. And if they’re only a few months old, they’ve got plenty of time for improvements.
