Last Friday was another ‘This is ‘ull’ live music night at the Adelphi Club.
I love the Adelphi Club, its one of those places where you go and think, jeez i have to come here more often because theres so much potential in the place and its somewhere you can really chill out and without a doubt you’ll see someone there who you know and havent seen in ages.
I think everybody whos anybody has been to the Adelphi Club at some point, and for some people its a love it or hate it kind of venue, but i guess its what your into.
I wouldn’t reccomend it if you...:
Love swaning down Princes Avenue on a Saturday night
Spend 50quid a month on either spray tans or hair do’s
Can’t stand LOUD NOISES
Have a fit of hysterics and have to run home if theres no loo roll in the bog
I’d definately reccomend it if:
You love live music
You love the classic ‘Hull’ look
You couldn’t give 2 sh*ts about spray tans and hair do’s
Your a moocher, who loves a chilled out atmosphere
Back to the point i went there on Friday night to catch 3 live bands. The tax on the door was 3quid, which i thought was extreamely fair for a pound a band so i happily got out three english pounds of my purse and went in. I got there just as The Cliques were in mid set, i could hear the sound of frontman Simons voice as i walked up to the building.
After previously seeing The Cliques for the first time at The Sesh, this was the 3rd or 4th time id seen them now within the space of about 2 weeks, they just seem to be everywhere at the moment doing the ‘Hull rounds’ and are impossible to escape! Because it was the 3rd or 4th time i’d seen them i found myself singing along to a few of the songs with a smile on my face. This band has really grown on me just lately and you only need to spend about 2 minutes with these guys to realise that they’re all insane weirdos filled with E numbers, spastic moves and alot of tongue and cheek (and i mean that in the nicest way possible) it works and i love it! Always give me a tickle.
Despite the fact that they’re all constantly hyper and out for a laugh they do take thier music seriously and dont show there freakish ways in there playing, but showcase their talent and energy and got a few people dancing along too.
The next band on were Rednight Strip, with extreamely tall frontman with amazing vocals. I recognised the basist as the basist in Shindigg and noticed even though he pulled some rather strange faces when playing the sound the 4 made worked well. I wouldn’t class it as Indie or rock, but something inbetween that went well with a few pints of Strongbow.
All was going well, there was bog roll in the toilets, hand towels in the drier thing and i could easily get to the bar and had only paid 3 quid for a whole nights worth of entertainment, i was happy.
The Last band on were Lecorum, i’ve always had a soft spot for Lecorum after seeing them at The Lamp a few months ago and met the bunch who seemed like a lovely bunch of guys. With Keyboardist Damo making the band have something a little more special than your average 2 guitars, bass, drums and vocals. They really do put on a brilliant performace and the sound quality at The Adelphi made them sound just as they’re supposed to.
They only had their first gig in January and within the short time they’ve had, they have exploded with some of the biggest names in music already including Orson, The Sunshine Underground and Tiny Dancers (Just to name a few) along with their new EP Clockwork. I’d catch these guys in Hull why you can because in my opinion, they’re on the verge of something bigger.
Overall I had a pleasantly good night and felt content that my live music needs had been fulfilled. Thanks This is ‘Ull.

The Holy Orders & Oppenheimer
Wednesday 25th April 2007
After Fonda 500 cancelled playing at the Adelphi ‘due to illness’ HullVibe still went along to catch the sounds of The Holy Orders and Oppenheimer.
The Adelphi wasn’t filled with angry, confused Fonda fans but a pleasant collection of local folk, checking out what’s new.
The Holy Orders are fronted by ex-Edible 5ft Smiths front man Matt who, if you’ve seen him before always puts on a good show. I’d never seen them playing together before but recognised a few of the songs from when Matt had played solo at Adelphi’s Monday night open mic night.
Moulded together, these guys are a brilliant band to watch, and must have to chew their way threw 15 boxes of fizzy astro belts to pull off the energy they have!
Every band member on their feet was letting their freak hang loose!
Although non-regulars of The Adelphi could feel quite intimidated by such a presence on stage in such a small space and maybe playing on a bigger stage is where these guys should be.
Oppenheimer followed. A 2 piece band from Belfast with an Indie pop, electrifying sound.
So there I was, minding my own business when these guys came on stage, started playing and straight away put me in a trace with my mouth wide open in awe without even asking! How rude!
The Vocalist (Shaun Robinson), a Moby look-a-like, was on drums, keys AND guitars and the other guy (Rocky O'Reilly) was on Guitar, keys AND percussion! And there was me thinking that blokes could only do one thing at once! WRONG!
If you like the sound of The Postal Service, you’ll love these guys! They pump out funky tune after tune and the Vocalist Shaun Robinson is the type of character you could take home to your Mother!
Keep your eyes peeled for these guys and if you get the chance, definitely go see them. In the meantime you can check out their myspace www.myspace.com/oppenheimer and have a listen to those funky tunes, you’ll see what I mean!

-FITS…..NOT OF LAUGHTER- I ventured to Ye Olde Adelphi this week, which……….if you haven’t been…. is like a den/shanty town/underground Goblin Cave, but still…..Legendary…………… reminds me a little of Carol Vorderman, the way it clearly ages but always seems to look the same……….. ANYHOO, a few ‘metal’ bands were playing and typically of me, I sat right in front of the friggin speaker………..AT A F**KIN METAL BAND GIG, good one Luce.……….. the bass was so loud I could feel it pumping right through my bones and I spent the whole 2 hours concentrating on not having a seizure.
-WUTHERING HEIGHTS- as I stared in amazement at the band onstage which consisted of a skinny ‘dark skinned’ creature covered in hair braids better than my Mother could ever do and some freakishly tall dude on bass headbanging like there was no tomorrow…..i stared bedazzled and thought to myself ‘they’d look so much better if they just cut off their hair and put on a nice suit’ This tall ginger dude on bass freakishly reminded me of Kate Bush the way his ginger locks swayed form side to side, up and down……it was after 4minutes of staring when I realised that people wer looking at me staring at this guy with a smile on my face…. JESUS CHRIST……what if they thought I fancied this tall fat, ginger Kate Bush Look-a-like??!?!? Oooooh the horror!

The Baseman Family are a really cool band to see! This being the second time i have had the pleasure of seeing them on stage, i realised that on that night they were 3 people down in their 12-man (and woman) lineup. But nevertheless, they still played perfectly for their full set and were really exciting to listen to.
The band are a funky fusion of jazz and funk and pop and this works really well, with the keyboardist, Mark, playing some awesome lines. The female lead vocalist carries the band well, especially as the backup vocalist was absent that night.
Definitley a band you should go and see. An enjoyable night!
