THE SESH:

Black Light Parade

Awful Sins

Lorca

We thought Summer was just on the horizon and I was getting so excited about the BBQ season coming up when all of a sudden my dreams of lounging in a beer garden with a pint were ruined by this weeks rain. How freaking rude.

Hope was not lost when I went to the Linnet and Lark last night to catch what bands Mak had decided to put on this week.

This weeks line up was Black Light Theatre, Awful Scenes and Lorca.

First up were Black light Theatre, and these poor buggers and travelled all the way from Sheffield in the peeing down rain to play. So I thought I’d better go down and check them out.

To be totally honest with you peeps, I wasn’t a particular fan of their first song, I found it a little boring, and by boring I mean that I looked round at the Pub at least 3 times to have a gander at anyone else who was doing anything particularly entertaining and I must have checked my phone about 3 times and sparked up 2 fags just to keep myself busy.

I’d done my research (and by research I mean checked out their myspace) and these guys had compared themselves to Bloc Party, which I AM a fan of, so I wasn’t too impressed with this first slow number.

Light was lifted with their second song, which did have a good beat to it, this just made me feel bad for being a little bored at their first song.

The thing when playing at the Linnet & Lark is that, like all gig venues, the gig-goers tend to stand around the band on stage with a pint in their hand, just goggling at them like they’re some sort of freak show until the end of their song when they clap a hand on the side of their pint glass. You get it everywhere where a new band plays. FACT. Not every band has the same effect as Kylie Minogue would do if she ever showed her face in Fuel but it still is a bit of a shame.

Next up were virgins of The Sesh, Awful Scenes. Making their first ever Sesh appearance. These fellow Hullians have a reet bopping sound to them, one of those bands that you see for the first time and can really imagine yourself dancing to their songs after you’ve had a few too many, which is always a good thing!

The crowd when watching these guys were still in the usual ‘lets stare at the freak show’ mode but a fair few were dancing along and really getting into those indie beats. I’m sure Mak’ll have these guys back again as they fitted in at The Sesh like Shilpa Shetty seems to fit into Victoria bays menus (odd I know).

The only pointer I’d give to these guys would be…putting on a broad cockney accent doesn’t automatically turn you into Pete Doherty like it would if you walked through Michael Kellys Stars in your eyes, but your getting there. They’ve definitely got a good sound and I’d still go and see them again.

Last on were Lorca, now these guys have been going for quite a while but this was the first time I’d ever witnessed them with my own eyeballs. They were a dencent enough band to watch but there was just something else stealing the limelight at this particular Sesh session…

It was a classic case of ‘the dancing lady’ placed at the very front on the stage, eyes slitting and arms swaying. A very common mis-hap if you’ve got ‘last on’ fever. I’m sure these guys were happy enough to have got someone so involved with their music vibe, whereas I’m thinking that she wont have been sharing the same ‘music vibe’ when she had to get up this morning!…very entertaining!

OVERALL ROUND UP:

If a band have travelled a fair bit to play at least let your pint wander for 2 seconds, or stick your fag in your mouth to applause them at the end of their set.

Keep your eyeballs peeled for Awful Scenes

Shilpa Shetty is THE new face of Victoria Bay takeaway

If you’ve got ‘last on fever’ keep a fair distance from the crowd to obtain ‘Dancing drunken lady syndrome’

Until next time!
