The Piper Club
Comedy Night 25/05/07
With Silky & Alistair Barrie
I’d never been to a comedy club in Hull, and to be quite honest it IS quite hard to find somewhere to go where you can just sit and be entertained other then your obvious live gigs.
The Piper Club on Newland Avenue to a comedy club ever last Saturday night of the month.
The Piper Club, for many is known for its choice of ciders and great student nights but for one night a month, it magically transforms into a sociable comedy club packed full of smiling faces glaring up at the act on Stage.
This Saturday, was blessed with Silky and Alistair Barrie and OH MY DAYS! These guys were both fan-bloody-tastic!
As I’d never been to Pipers comedy night before I didn’t quite know what to expect. The usual dance floor is packed full of table’s and sofas so you can have a lazy lounge and the Comedians are placed on the risen stage.
First up was Silky, a cheeky baldy in his mid thirties, full of opinions from how to annoy the police to taking the piss out of the German Student sat in the front row. Hilarious.
I can’t remember the last time I actually laughed at a comedian as it’s hard to find someone with something different about them nowadays but I must have only been there about 42 seconds (approx) before I burst out in fits like a 3 year old who’s been given their first hamster.
Silky was ripe with gags and interacted with the audience to emphasize his love for booze. He didn’t come alone. Silky brought his guitar along for the ride. He wasn’t one of those, ‘oh look at me, I’m funny AND musical’ type of guys but towards the end of his set he played us a few comical songs of his own that were HILARIOUS.
From wiping your k**b on the curtains to pulling a scarecrow in a field after a night out?!?! Crazy stuff and I’d LOVE to know what goes on in his head! so so random but fantastic.
Honestly, I don’t know the last time I found songs so funny and am quite surprised that I didn’t fall off my chair laughing. EXCELLENT.
Next up was Alistair Barrie, a taller guy from London who was also in his mid-thirties. As soon as I heard that he was from London I took an immediate dis-like, just because I like things local and people who are on my wavelength that you can really connect with. Not some guy who rides the tube for 3 hours of his life everyday and ‘does lunch’ in Covent Gardens. –BAD OPINION LUCY! This guy was also as funny as watching a dog with it’s head out of a car window (now that’s funny).
His gags were mainly based around the Brits how we’re all so stereotypical. And EVERYTHING he was saying was true!
It made you sit back and think to yourself how funny we all are without actually trying to be funny. Or just plain stupid!
I’m rubbish at trying to repeat jokes so I wont try, you HAD to be there.
Other jokes were based around the state of the planet and his bad sex experiences, which were so so funny and him acting them out was just the icing on the cake for me.
I’d definitely go and see these guys again and can’t wait till The Piper Clubs comedy night next month, although I’ve got such high expectations this time round!
Its something different to do in Hull and definitely worth going to, even if your planning on having a wasted weekend, this finishes at around 10.30 so you can still go off on a bender afterwards or even stay in Piper all night. Best thing is even if you’re having a weekend from hell and really don’t feel like going out, this is determined to put you in a good mood!
