I spent last Friday night not in my usual hangout but at the Welly Club.
It was time for another Shinobi, so I grabbed my good friend Lauren to give me a hand at spotting at the cities biggest and best Drum & Bass night.
I handed her one of my loverly Hullvibe T shirts and a camera and we were off, hand in hand skipping towards the Welly sunset, ahem.
Lauren had never been to Shinobi before but i insisted that she'd enjoy it.
The one thing I like about Shinobi is that it brings in such a mix of people, its loved by absolutely everone, the dance bastards, the scenesters, those indie twats that live their life by NME, the ones who are still living in the hippy relm and even the odd chav or too. Once they're in the Shinobi jungle all differences are forgotten in one swift DnB movement.
- No offence if i have offended any of the above :-S
The atmosphere that Shinobi creates is one that no other clubnight can offer, The Ballroom being the main attraction with fantastic lasers, UV and jungle netting to suit the mood.
The night started with the Shinobi Residents, naturally.
If you've stayed till late on a Thursday night at Welly you'll have had a tasty dribble as to what a night at Shinobi is like, once MC AOB has finished running up and down the Welly stairs dealing with troublesome fussy drunks on a Thursday, he'll take over the front roon and have a bit of a jolly himself on the mic. This usually packs out within a few minutes, enticing everyone else in the club into the smallest room.
This wasn't a Thursday, this was Shinobi, so punters got the full whack this time round, no messin.

The word 'rave' isn't exactly the one i'd use to describe Shinobi but it IS the only place in
Shinobi sure puts the 'Bass' in Drum 'n' Bass, it's one of those types of nights where if you leave your drink on the side, the bass'll knock it off as it shakes to the side of the ledge and drops on the floor...so make sure you keep hold of it.
with a few 'OKAY, OKAY's' and 'SHINOBI ARE YOU READYYYYYY?!' I thought jesus christ, what if i'm not? this crowd is gonna demolish me let alone my camera that I'd borrowed from work. Shit. At those types of moments that’s when Lauren and I take a break and go for a fag on the Terrace because the crowd really do give it some welly (no pun intended)
If you've never been to a Shinobi before you can see for yourself on a video that i did last year, I just re-found it ...
Thats of the Alternative end of year Ball last year, another fantastic Shinobi..
Anyhoo, back at work, another weekend over but plenty of pictures to look back at another Shinobi night.
I’d recommend Shinobi to anyone who;
- Likes Drum & Bass (obviously)
- Has some mad dancing skills
- A fan of a good old fashioned rave
- Likes Glow sticks & Glow Paint
- Appreciates good music
I wouldn’t recommend Shinobi to anyone who:
- Suffers from heart problems
The Next Shinobi:
Friday 14th March, The Welly Club, Feat CHASE, STATUS & Shimah
