HULL’S JAZ CAFÉ BAR LAUNCHES WORLD’S OLDEST KNOWN COCKTAIL
To mark the launch of its new cocktail and food menu and its refreshed new look, the Jaz Café Bar on Lowgate, Hull, has introduced the world’s oldest cocktail – the Sazerac - reputedly the first ever known cocktail dating back to the early 1800s.
Sitting alongside mojitos, manhattans and a comprehensive list of more than 30 other cocktails and drinks, the Sazerac was invented by Antoine Amadie Peychaud, a Creole apothecary, who moved to New Orleans from the West Indies in the1830s bringing his family’s special blend of bitters with him. Originally sold in his shop for medicinal purposes, the Sazerac was duly named by a friend of Antoine’s, John Schiller, who opened a Sazerac Coffee House in the 1850s and introduced the cocktail, thought to be named after the container in which it was served – the “coquetier”.
Jaz has introduced the classic cocktail, but the genuine recipe is still a deep dark secret and one of the ingredients, Absinthe, is still banned in the US and other countries today due to importation and production restrictions.
As well as a makeover, the premium bar has launched a new food menu which offers everything from gourmet sandwiches to speciality burgers and sharing food to lite lunches, all freshly prepared, home cooked by the chef and his team. A new family-friendly weekend policy has been introduced with young diners eating free all day Saturday when accompanied by an adult dining from the main menu. ‘Precious’ nights, the bar’s female-friendly weekly event take place every Thursday 8-1am and the Jaz Cocktail Party offers free canapés and nibbles and kicks off every Friday 5-7pm.
The Jaz Café Bar is a premium 1920s retro/modern venue by day with great food, using locally sourced produce in line with the bar’s policy to champion local and regional producers and a lively music scene by night for discerning customers. There are currently three bars in the group, including Lowgate, Hull, Saturday Market, Beverley and Prince Street, Bridlington.

Commenting on the launch of its new cocktail, Simon Mountford, Jaz proprietor said: “We are always looking for something different at Jaz and when we discovered the Sazerac, we just had to launch it onto our cocktail menu. Our recipe is Remy Martin, Peychauds Bitters and sugar syrup chilled with Absinthe and served over cracked ice. It is a contemplative drink with complex and interesting layers of different flavours and we look forward to introducing our customers to this quintessential New Orleans must-try cocktail.”
