The Adelphi Club,

Saturday 9th Feb 08

The GST Cardinals…

This Saturday the Adelphi club was yet again the home of some top class local entertainment. I’d been in Leeds the night before to see the NME Shockwaves tour (that’s another story CLICK HERE if you wanna read that one!) Anyhoo, after travelling back in the wrong direction for a good few miles (towards Manchester) I got home and had time for a quick kip before venturing down to our local live music hub.

As far as I knew, Fine 69 and GST Cardinals were playing, I wasn’t wrong. They were but so were 2 others and just as I got out the taxi I saw Fine69 frontman Kenny saying ‘Thanks for havin’ us on’ to Adelphi creator Paul Jackson, shit. I’d missed them. Apologies to Fine69 for missing you but I didn’t realise you’d be on so early! – I’ll catch you at the BOTB final in Manchester boys! CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT FINE69 IN THE BOTB

I walked into a surprisingly full Adelphi Club and grabbed a pint. GST weren’t on next, it was ‘Hungover Stuntmen’ from Geordie land, managed by the creator of the always amusing Viz magazine, unlike Viz, Hungover Stuntmen didn’t particularly entertain me but I guess after watching 3 brilliant bands on the NME shockwaves tour the night before made these blokes seem like meer children, clanking around with instruments after playing ‘dress up’ in mothers linen basket. No offence fellas but to be completely honest, I don’t like ya. They’ve only been hyped around this area because they have a comical manager, maybe that’s why he’s managing them, to give him a giggle.

I milled around while Hungover Stuntment trawled through their set list and to be honest the moment they’d finished I couldn’t remember one song that they’d played. Sorry lads.

A few fags, a quick wee and another pint later the GST Cardinals came on.

The lads are in the middle of their huge UK tour at the moment and this Saturday they were back in their hometown of Hull.

GST bring a brilliant crowd with them, they may be a bit on the young ugly side but they sure do get excited! (The crowd I mean :-P)

As soon as they started playing their first song the place was a riot, pints flying, fists punching and sweaty faces all singing along. The Cardinals were back, and after a long tour it must be comforting to come back to your hometown and receive such a fantastic response.

30 seconds in and frontman Dave was covered in his own and other peoples pints as the room went crazy for the Cardinals. The lads have got some fantastic songs, the type that you’ll hear live and the next time you see them you’ll be singing along, they really stick in your head which is more than can be said for most of the jibber jabber crap that pours out of bands mouths these days. These guys have got some real tunes and I’d be happy to stick a GST Cardinals album in my Car CD player any day if I could guarantee that a mob of loud, rioting Cardinals lovers wouldn’t start trying to tip it over and jump on it when I stopped at the traffic lights. They really are that crazy.

When you see the GST Cardinals your guaranteed a brilliant atmosphere, they’re one of the few bands in Hull that know how to get a crowd going, in fact I don’t think they even need to try that hard anymore, they’ve grabbed their audience and all they have to do to please them is play. They do get the young ‘uns hyped up, one fattie even jumped on stage and started singing along down Matty’s mic for a bit, which I found highly amusing. Another had a bang at crowd surfing over about 5 people, the poor little sods. Dave does wind them up though and treats every venue as if he’s playing in his own front room as he jumps into the crowd, sharing the mic and getting the tykes involved while he climbs over anything and everything in sight as he belts out the set, I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, he’s like a friggin Chimpanzee that bloke. I do love Chimps though.

I had to stand on a chair nearer to the back to grab some pics, there was no way I was gonna feed myself to the lions by attempting to get to the front and I could see everything going on that way.

They played a few old favourites and a new one which went down just as well as the rest. They room didn’t stop moving until the Cardinals stopped playing, just the way a gig should be. Every song was tight, the sound was brilliant (As it always is in the Adelphi), with exceptions for the loss of vocals now and again when one of the little scallies in the crowd stole the mic off Dave.

If you haven’t already I’d recommend seeing the GST Cardinals live rather then listening to their myspace tracks, they’re good but just don’t do the guys justice to the sound and atmosphere they can create on stage.

They’re still on tour now until the end of March (that’s dedication for ya!) but I’m sure they’ll find time in their busy schedule do grace us with another gig in the Hull area upon their return.

Great gig guys, keep up the good work,
