Bed 14
Bed 14, the boutique on Newland Avenue that I look longingly through the window at as i sit enjoying a glass of wine and cigarette across the road at Zest, ‘I have to go in and have a look’, I tell myself everytime I’m in one of these situations or everytime I almost crash my car as I drive by trying to look at the new garments on the manikins.
Finally I set aside some time to go in their myself, not only too see what other treasures lurked beyond my window shopping, but to meet the brains behind Bed 14.
Hull born and bred, Debbie Fletcher has been the proud owner of Bed 14 for 2 ½ years and she says that it, ‘Took off the day it opened’. Debbie is responsible for bringing to life old vintage clothing and breeding new stylish garments to our city life, feeding her passion for fashion. Debbie has always had an eye for design with a background in hairdressing and Garden Design. With Bed 14 Debbie not only brings fantastic stylish clothing names to Hull but has the chance to share her designs with the rest of the City.
It seems that Bed 14 has become, a posh girls Top Shop in its popularity but certainly not in mass produced garbage. It has a selected few of the same item to put a stop to those embarrasing moments of seeing someone else wearing your dress and not only has top quality stylish labels such as ‘Fairground’,’Motel’, and ‘Pop’, but individual garments if your after something a little bit different.
Bed 14 not only has some gorgeous dresses but has a wide range of beautiful Jackets, Scarfs, Belts, boots and jewelery to make you sparkle.
80’s party dresses have also been selling fast apparently!
With Bed 14 taking up a storm in the area of Restaurants and Cafe Bars, I wondered weather Debbie would consider expansion of Bed 14, ‘Definately, I don’t think I’d have another one in Hull but I’m thinking about opening one in Leeds’.
She explained that she wouldn’t want to sell out and move to the High Street, Bed 14 is in a perfect cosmopolitan area at the moment which fits to her customers taste perfectly and it just wouldn’t suite the bustle that comes with the high street.
For those that think ‘vintage’ is all a load of 2nd hand tat, you need to look further, as many of these garments are truely, ‘Unique’.
50% of the clothing in Bed 14 is new and 50% is re-worked, which means that the garments have been washed, pressed, modernised and in Debbies case, brought to life.
If you see something you like but it doesn’t quite fit, alterations can easily be made for a small fee.
With vintage clothing become ever more popular Debbie explains,‘I went to the Welly Club the other week and saw loads of girls wearing clothes from Bed 14 and I loved it! It really put a smile on my face!’.
If you haven’t yet had a look in Bed 14 I’d strongly suggest having a nosey, I guarantee you’ll find something you love. In the meantime, i’ll be keeping an eye on those manikins in the window!
