whats with all these new promotions companies?

in your face promotion? bad taste promotion? life burns records? scenester promotions? theres too many to take notice of!

Are these promotions companies even companies? i dont reckon so, i might be a kill joy and report em to the tax man, i bet neither of em are registered companies anyway, i reckon its all a con for some quick cash in the back pocket. Prove me wrong before i pick up the phone and start dialling

As a sometime promoter of gigs I can ensure you that my gigs have over the course of about 2 years completely and utterly broken even. Any money was split between the bands and to cover the costs of future shows - when you bring one (or even two) out-of-town band into Hull it isn`t very often that you turn a profit on the night. I think you will find that is true of several of the promotion "companies" you have named above.

The Gig That Exploded isn`t a registered company but I can ensure that I personally file a "self-assessed" tax return that takes into account all my income and out-goings.

Even then so what if the promoter does make a profit? They are a putting in a deal of work and risk in putting on the gig so deserve somekind of reward for it. I don`t do it for a money reward; I`m happy getting in bands that I want to see play Hull even if they don`t always pull the largest crowds. However, not everyone will think that way and if they put the work in then they deserve some reward be it to the ego or the pocket.

BAD TASTE PROMOTIONS would like to appologise for putting on some great events, we would also like to take this oppertunity to admit were a rip off company, and the bands and fans get ripped off!!

WHAT??????? We put on nights at adelphi, cheap, wth great bands, offering a great night. bands get paid, venue gets paids, we get paid

we take time and effort to promote and advertise our events, making sure they all go well

we help to get bands noticed

but yeh, were bad people we should just quit now!

undergroud independant music scene requires underground independant music promoters free from influence of government and commerce.

tax men may be interested to know about it because theyre all in it to grab money and rob us blind but when you consider that theres very little money in it, youre only robbing them of their time and should you be successful... hull of its right to good music.

peace of mind comes from acceptance... accept it and get over it.

I have had a few "Companies" come to me to put gigs on. Even some from your list...and allowed them too just to get some bands in Hull.

I dont think its fair that bands get "Signed" by these "Companies" just to find that its a 18 year old lad with a computer and a printer with the time to put a poster up in school so all his mates can fill the venue and make it look busy while being able to call themselves promoters.

As you can tell, it does not reflect on the Promo companies who have responded to this thread (Nice work guys/gals). Simply put, without promoters, bands would not come. That is because the venue does not always have time to do it along with the day to day running (And working F/T also) and this is why @ Ringside, i leave the promoter with all the door takings so it gives them an incentive to get good bands in to play to a goods amount of people so they all get a little for doing the work.

Quite a lot of the time, the venue loses out, the promoter loses out and also the bands do. Whether it be the lack of people, damage caused or the genre (all drink water n nothin else).

E.g, We got some band calles "Set Your Goals" on a £600 guarantee (and other little bits n bobs...quite supprised they did not ask for 1000 brown m&ms). The promoter made the £600 (just) and then was forced to give over 66% of the profit after deductions. For a weeks work, he came out at -£70 down...so we paid for the soundman and PRS our selves which left the promoter to break even.

I would say that the majority of my promoters do it for the music as there is hardly any profit in it but it is THEY who are keeping the music scene going.

owh, stirred up quite a concoction here havent I?

Just a blatant fact made that there seems to be so many of these promotions companies around at the moment its hard to keep up.

Yes we need promoters. We all love gigs but is there really any need of quite so many people doing the same thing?

All these nights seem to be at the Adelphi too and alot of the time with local bands that youd expect to see for free at one of the many other live nights in Hull (the sesh, sharkeys, lamp etc)

i think too many are jumping on the band wagon (pun intended)

Dear holzbolz,

This be Benjamin R Jenner, from Life Burns Records. Your right we arent a promotion company. Life burns records is a european based Independent Record Label who pay their taxes like every other company. We also are a PLC company so feel free to invest in our comapny if you see fit. Life Burns puts on shows at Ringside, Adelphi in Hull as well as Joesphss Well in Leeds, 1 in 12 Bar in Bradford, Mr Cs in Poole and TJs in Newport.

We also run Horrorfest, a International Based Music Event and Hulls Welly Club with over 35 bands on two stages. So i dont really see where you are going with this argument. We are an Extablished Label with many european and north American bands on our roster. All we do in Hull is try to raise awareness in the city with new music.

But who am i to try and better your city.

Regards
Benjamin R Jenner

I dont think it should be deleted...its got all on here talking. I am sure no offence was intended but it takes a topic to be raised in order for people to have a view.

Id just like to give my opinion on this, "independant" promotion companies often means they dont have offices and hundreds of people working for them, hence the word "independant"...

Most of them do it for their love of music, not to make money, and without them, you wouldnt be hearing any decent music and the bands wouldnt be making it.
Take Bad Taste promos for example, they find decent bands, get them gigs, set up events and make sure everyone has a class night at that gig. They barely make a few pence, but thats because its the music theyre doing it for, not the money. and from a bands point of view, surely having some good recognition from a promoter is better than nothing, be it a widespread promotions company or a small one.

I was at the first Bad Taste gig and to be quite frank it was amazing, and everyone else there seemed to think so too. there was a great atmosphere and the bands mingled with the crowd because it was about the music not the money made.

The gigs set up by Bad Taste help to promote the bands more get them more gigs, we get to hear good music, the band get to do what they love, surely keeping everyone happy? apart from this "holbolz" character who seems to have a negetive opinion on everything, im all for people giving their own opinion but no one seems to agree with you, so maybe you should calm down with all the abuse.

and Bad Taste Promotions- keep up the good work!
xxx

Apology Accepted, Please dont bring Our Name into a "slagging match" again without knowing full details of our company.

and.

rosi_viper_x

Life Burns is Independent however we have offices in, England, France and Italy, and we have more than one person workin for us(we aint 16 year olds behind a computer. we put out cds that you can buy through many distrobution companys throught the whole world) so your ideas on this topic are a little off topic, but i get the jist of it. And yes Bad Taste is a very good promotion company in hull, I like to help out there to help them run shows on time .
