Re: Ringside past artists and bands??? - Posted: 3 months ago
Ok so having read some of the past reviews of Ringside, Ive noticed that some people dont really think of Ringside as a gig venue alongside places such as Adelphi and Welly (amongst others).
Ive been thinking about all of the bands whove played here over the last 4 1/2 years and how many have got big to some degree (or were).
Here goes...
Enter Shikari
Paddingtons
Towers of London
Youmeatsix (now on tour with Fall Out Boy)
Ed Tudor Pole
UK Subs
Quireboys
Neville Staples Specials
And probably loads more that I cant remember. Hulls always going to be one of those places that people really dont see as a gig town but its good to know that some decent(!) bands and artists have been at Ringside on the way to and from the top, hopefully we can keep pulling in good music both to Ringside and Hull.
Anyone want to add to this list?

Ive hardly seen any publicity for this venue to be honest over the years, apart from the odd bit on the net, and not everyone has access to that. Last gig I saw there was the Deck Cheese Records Tour a few years ago, good night with some quality bands. Also remember a band from America callled The Hint playing there in a last minute gig (www.myspace.com/thehint)
I can also remember
Bromheads Jacket
Fony
and someone who is signed to Victory Records but the name escapes me!

Advertising is a sore point for us unfortunately. Gigs are put on by outside promoters and not us, therefore it is their responsibility to promote their gig in order to gain money to pay their bands, we try to help as much as we can with things like Myspace and here.Ive hardly seen any publicity for this venue to be honest over the years, apart from the odd bit on the net, and not everyone has access to that. We would advertise in the local rag but for the amount of our general gig audience who read the small bits in the paper, its pointless (and costs a fortune!). Weve also tried to get our regular and gig listings into the free bit in the paper many times but for some unknown reason its either printed wrong or never appears????
Tried Sandman and TenFootCity but if you dont regularly pay for advertising with them, they seem to forget about featuring you for anything (again this included the free listings bit).
Id absolutely love to have the time to spend driving an old banger of a van round Hull with a rusty advertising trailer but I sadly have to work on the bar (and I cant drive either!).
Id love to be able to promote our venue better but for our gig audience it seems like flyers in the appropriate shops and Myspace are the best options, all other suggestions would be welcomed though!

At ringside ive had the following bands:
Trigger The Bloodshed (Played Download 200
The Dead Lay Waiting (PLayed Bloodstock 200
Bury Tomorrow
The Arusha Accord
All Hail The Ruin
Abel is Dying (Italy)
then local bands,
however in mist of all this, im still a believer that ringside wouldnt be known for deathcore/metal if it wasnt for WC Promotions and Life Burns Records.

I have to disagree. WC/LB may have assisted but it was a joint effort from many promoters, many bands, fantastic audiences and a liberal venue. however in mist of all this, im still a believer that ringside wouldnt be known for deathcore/metal if it wasnt for WC Promotions and Life Burns Records.
In fact, being the major authority of Rindside (not by status but by knowledge having worked there for 10 years) i have seen the transition from a sports pub (having snooker tables upstairs then a boxing ring) to a function venue/regulars pub. Then to a Las Vagas themed venue then to a multi-diverse venue. I have been at Ringside longer than anyone. I have seen 4 different landlords (excluding myself). I have seen the good and the bad. I have seen many staff members/promoters/DJs/Bands over the years...and yes, i am only 28.
There is only one thing that is really certain, evolution has and will happen. But no one person is able to take credit or blame.
Re: Ringside past artists and bands??? - Posted: 3 months ago
Theres also one main reason that certain bands are reluctant to play at Ringside or in Hull at all isnt there????
A certain record label perhaps?
Credit can be given to all of the promoters over the past 4 1/2 years whove brought many well and lesser-known bands to Ringside from the infamous Nigel in the beginning to Dom, Spud and Steffan to name but a few.

clearly on about benny from life burns records here annabut yet you let him put on a gig last night
so why dont you stop slaggin off the promoters that help keep ringside a float
i heard it was a pretty good turnout for a tuesday night, so maybe give him some praise instead of been two faced!
as your happy enough to let him use your venue but your the first one to jump and slag him off

That is a little harsh. Gigs do not keep Ringside afloat i can assure you...and we dont slag off promoters at all. Quote: A certain record label perhaps?

Benny did not put the gig on Tuesday. He is employed by the promoter who did put it on and yes, he did a good job.
We dont "Slag" promoters off but we also dont give credit to one or two people when it is down to the hard work of EVERYONE involved.
Re: Ringside past artists and bands??? - Posted: 3 months ago
Now, back to the bands that you can recall seeing at Ringside.
Kunt and the Gang...(fantastic if i dont say so myself)

I wouldnt be so unprofessional as to name names, so I suggest you get your facts right first before trying to cause unwarrented hassle.
Back to the bands....
Erm...seen so many here over the years Im completely lost! Anyone else add to this?

NO BODY PLAYS OR AT LEAST LIKES TO PLAY RINGSIDE CAUSE ITS A SHIT HOLE, ALWAYS FULL OF UNDERAGE DRINKERS, AND MOST OF ALL THE SOUND IS SOOO BAD ITS UNBELIEVABLE! IF U REALLY WANTED TO BE RESPECTED ON THE MUSIC SCENE U SHOULD THINK OF GETTING A DECENT SOUND SYSTEM CAUSE THE ONE U HAVE IS NON EXSISTANT! ALL YOUR MIKES ARE FUKED, THE DRUMS NEVER GET FULLY MIKED UP AND THE STAGE IS TINY!
PUT SOME INVESTMENT INTO YOUR VENUE AND SHOW THE KIDS OF THE SCENE THAT U CARE ABOUT THEM BY PUSHING SOME OF THERE HARD SPENT MONEY ON A RE-VAMP AND A DECENT SOUND SYSTEM THEN MAYBE BANDS WOULD CONSIDER PLAYING IT MORE,

Sorry, but people do like to play @ Ringside. It is not a shit hole but one of the cleanest venues i have been too. NOBODY gets served without ID and bag ckeck are made. It has been said that it is one of the strictest venues in Hull for underage drinking. If underagers are drunk before...they dont come in. If over 18s get served for them then the drinks get taken off them. The sound is not bad...its fantastic...and yes, investment has been made to make it better. It is a full peavey setup. And it cost me approx £6,000 for amps, speakers, crossovers, compressor limiters etc. The mics are about £100 each (SM58s) but i cant mic up all the drums because bands break them....now how much of that money was taken from the "hard earned" money the "Kids" bring in...none. It was out of my own pocket.
I have invested more in Ringside that you will ever know. The "hard earned" money that people pay to see these bands goes to the bands and not to the venue itself...That is why i also work F/T elsewhere.
Pubs generally are not doing well for more reasons than one...36 a week are closing and you think a revamp is needed...get real...ok, ill revamp it and leave the bills to stew, then when the place gets closed...and bands lose ANOTHER venue then it will be down to someone who has only ever posted once on this site. That says to me that you are not interested in the live music of Hull anyway.
Bands will play here and do play here whenever they are asked...and when they want. I have not had a band come to me saying that they wont play here again nor have i had cause to think that the Ringside, as a venue, is that bad that noone will play.
You are in the minority
Once again, back to the topic at hand.

i think its a 100-1 vote adelphi wins everytime

Adelphi is an institution in its own right. We are not in competition with them. Quote: Benny did not put the gig on Tuesday. He is employed by the promoter who did put it on and yes, he did a good job.

All promoters pay to use Ringside is £50 directly to the sound man as he is there usually from 4/5pm til around midnight. The venue received nothing.
So, how much is it to book Adelphi...i would not know because i dont compete with them...and would not want too as they are too far away from me to worry. I think they are as close to me as linnet...and we are not in competition.
We have been assured by the promoters for tuesday that Benny is an employee. I am happy with their assurances.
Also, your comment about "It being down to the promoters and the band and no one else"...what about things such as...word of mouth, my efforts to push nights, Ringsides cheap beer prices etc. They all count.
This thread was not a "Slag off Ringside" thread, it was to see who we have had here playing...for nostalgia rather than anything else.
Re: Ringside past artists and bands??? - Posted: 3 months ago
this is my last comment on this thread!
right one of my mates put on a birthday party at Ringside not so long ago, they got charged £70 !! not £50
the soundman didnt really have a clue in all fairness, like someone mentioned earlier the drum kit wasnt micd properley!
two of the mics cut out half way through a bands set.
Adelphi, which is by far the best venue in Hull charges less than £50 for the venue, PA and soundman.
word of mouth etc.... NO! just NO!
promoters spend money on posters and flyers, spend time on puttin these up around Hull
spend time puttin them all over the internet and in gettin them in the local paper and magazines.
what i will give Ringside is they was strict on ID which was good to be honest, but someone who was 20 got a drink from the bar, and then a memeber of staff came and took it off him! no refund or anything! just because he didnt have ID, but clearly looked his age and had already been served!
if you want ringside to be a succsess for a local music venue, then turn it into a venue rather than a function room!
you need a good soundman, good sound system, and sort upstairs out! it reminds me of my grannys house!
but if your happy the way ringside is now, thats fine, but please dont keep goin on about how its a respected venue, when its not!
i mean look from a promoters point of view...why pay more money for ringside then adelphi?
look from a bands point of view...why play at ringside when you can play at adelphi, lamp, welly.... etc
look from a fans point of view... why come to hear a shit sound when you can go to adelphi, lamp, welly.... etc

Re: Ringside past artists and bands??? - Posted: 3 months ago
I think this is being taken well out of context.
If a certain label being life burns destroyed bands from coming to hull then thats just abit of a shitty reason. After what has happened in the past there is still bands wanting to be booked, their is just a lack of promoters willing to put up the cash for them. For example most bands people want to see these days in the metal genre are £350, however hardly no promoters will take this risk in hull as you would need 100+ people to make your cash back before venue charges unless you have the money in your pocket to put on the show.
As its been stated many times i have never been in it to make money off any shows, plus whatever money i do make normally ends up being spend on drinks, i put the shows on because people in hull deserve a good time, and hopefully they come to the shows to see the bands regardless of who puts them on.
Yes i was with Live Agency on Tuesday night and i did my best not to work on the door, I was there with "The Dead Lay Waiting" a Band i personally manage who was playing the show, and later towards the end i was with "Abby Lammas" an acoustic artist who i also repersent. I only went on the door at the start because of the fact if im repersenting a company im not going to let some1 i dont know look after all the cash. Once its started then i moved off the door and was found many times either outside smoking or with my bands preparing them for the night.
I certainly have no problem using Ringside, Adelphi or Lamp for any future show, i know people will come to my shows and i think the venues over see this, they think because one major thing went wrong then its the end of the world, yes everyone in the bands and people alike knew i would be there on tuesday but it never stopped them from coming to the show. I do think ive done alot to help hulls music scene and i will continue to do so, i just wish i would have backing for a venue so i can make them some money on the bar sales.
For the Record:
Ringside - £50
Adelphi - £30
Lamp - FREE ON A WEDNESDAY(When most metal gigs are put on)
Tigers Lair - Free
Welly Club - £450 (maybe more now)
- Hope that clears most of it up
Benny
