Manchester has like 5 or something stupid; went to see The Wildhearts at the one in Manchester Academy, it was just a no frills room with a stage, the bar was seperate and downstairs (and well stocked too; readily chilled Jagermeister..sign me up) and it was f**king ace! I don't pass out unless im REALLY enjoying myself..
Really do think Hull needs to sort itself out when it comes to venues..

Yeah, we often have this debate
The biq question is though, are there enough gig going types in hull to justify extra venues?
There are so many live nights already and a lot of those don't seem to be anywhere near full
Manchesters population is about four times that of Hull's (roughly) and because there are two big unis and a lot more career opportunities there for people in their teens, twenties and thirties then there are a lot more people of the right age group, and with money to spend that pack these places out
I agree size wise there are some gaps in terms of having the right types of venues capacity wise that would encouarge certain touring bands to include Hull on their itineraries though

They don't allow ANY promotion of non-uni gigs on campus. Obviously they are running it as a business but how many normal venues have flyers for other places? They will give their own promotion priority of course but it's vital for the scene as a whole for everywhere to promote everything. It leads to better competition which forces everyone to up their game -resulting in a better choice for the end user.
I have also heard that they actively discourage students from going out into the rest of Hull because it's "too dangerous" and there's a lot of violence towards students. Of course there will be the idito minority who will cause trouble but you'd get that anywhere. It's not so much of a problem as to warrant that kind of blanket response. In any other city the students make a significant contribution to the local nightlife economy. Many go out two times a week or more and spend a sizeable amount of their loans on socialising. The students and the locals have a co-dependent relationship in terms of the variety and quality of options available to them for going out and seeing live music.
If the uni were to have another venue it would only make the problem worse. Offer the students even greater choice and more of them will never leave campus. I fully agree we more mid-sized live music venues (with proper sound systems and engineers...) but I think it needs to be in the real city. Of course, put it near the uni. Of course, give NUS discounts. You could even invite the union to put a few nights on there, to get the students interested. But use it to entice them out of the halls of residence and into the rest of the venues that we have here. Hull has a scene going on but it can't grow any more until we get more students on board.
Surely the point of going to uni is the get out and meet new people, have a party and discover more about yourself and your place in the world. And maybe get a degree as well, but mostly the partying.

The Asylum acts as a little bubble to protact the students but i dont think the clubs help either, having nights on where its just 'student only' like the sugarmill on a monday doesn't help...
the students'll never meet any real peple in the real world, are they not allowed to mix with us mere A level grade commoners?

I noticed the holloway are coming back to hull and they're playing there. i wanna go and see them but the thought of being in asylum just puts me right off.
I'd rather see them at welly or at the piper club again
