I love the place, saw my first gig there and seen many great bands and had some top nights there since
But every year we seem to keep hearing stories about the adelphi struggling to survive, facing battles with everything from the council to licencing to increased competition from bandwagon jumping venues to most tellingly, finance. And given that most cities (bigger ones too) seem to have all gradually lost their equivalent of the adelphi I can well believe it
Fair play to Jacko for toughing it out then
Its therefore been especially pleasing to have seen some great nights at the adelphi just of late with fantastic acts on and the place packed to the rafters. Particular fave recent highlights have included Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jongleurs, GST cardinals, and most recently the amazing Lightspeed Champion on Saturday
I hope the place being packed out more is helping towards it securing the long term future which always seems to be shrouded in doubt
Call me a music snob but the adelphi attracts a nicer class of music fan, rather than just the scenesters and soccer AM indie chavs that litter some of these other places just trying to look cool or making sure they don't miss anything
Anyway I'm not sure you can be called a snob by claiming that your favoured hangout is the biggest dive with the worst bogs in the world. I wouldn't wanna change it though
Having yo-yo just a stumble down the road now also makes it even more of an appealing night out these days
Long may it continue

Not a music snob Shady, only the true music fans appreciate the The Adelphi club for everything that it stands for, The Fantastic bands that have graced the stage, the pot hole car park and even the scruffy bogs, its what the Adelphi is made of. To be fair yeah i've seen some shockingly poor efforts for musicians up there but where else do the likes of Lightspeed Champion perform on the same stage as talentless tw@ts with dodgy haircuts?
When the Adelphi does get some brilliant bands in (and just lately it's been on top form) I wouldnt want to be anywhere else and neither would the rest of the gig goers, theres nothing friendlier than an Adelphi crowd and to my recollection i've never seen so much as a flick of trouble in there (excluding the metal crowd when they get in and have their fist fun, but thats just how they like it).
We Love Adelphi, We Do
We Love Adelphi, We Do
We Love Adelphi, We Do
Adelphi we love you!
(thoughts of the crowd football chanting to Lightspeed Champion last week just popped into my head)

dude, it's really really bad in there. like, really bad. like, y'know, bad?
And that's not 'bad-meaning-good', it's 'bad-meaning-likely-to-cause-fever-and-vomiting'.
The toilets don't so much 'have character' as 'build character' - if you make it out alive you're a better, stronger person (although part of you will have died inside) They might make a more 4 documentary about your horrific ordeal.
I still love it as a venue. I just make sure I've been before I go, if you get me

Youv'e started me off now... we played a gig there last summer that was so busy and hot that the sweat was not only dripping down the walls, it actually formed a visible cloud that meant I struggled to see the bar from the stage. The tar and mildew of two decades of smoking and rising damp were awakened and you could actually taste them in the air.
It was one of the best gigs we have ever played but afterwards we felt thoroughly dirty, inside and out.
I suffered even more than the rest of them because playing a trumpet, especially as part of a very loud electro band, requires you to take massively deep lungfuls of air. Considering this was also about a week before the smoking ban and everyone was making the most of their freedom while it lasted, the purity of that air left a lot to be desired. Smoke, sweat, fungal spores. Nice. I actually couldn't speak properly for 2 days after the gig.
Please don't let this put you off going to the adelphi. They are trying to clean it up a bit. They've even put a new banner at the back of the stage...
