Get some decent bands on tho, I'd ask the bands personally rather than say, 'anyone interested then let us know' -otherwise you run the risk of the crappy ones who cant get a gig anywhere else, they wont pull a crowd

| | Posted: Feb 22 2008, 14:49 PM | Thank you for all your replies good and bad I will try and answer them all now, first of all thanks to hull vibe for their support and offer to spread the word it is much appreciated! Bit daft & Music HQ thanks for your comments I will try and answer your points yes the sesh & grapevine are also on every Tuesday the reason we do our indie night on a Tuesday is because we feel people can only afford to go out so many times a week. Working on a Tuesday we soon realised that we had people coming in on their way to grapevine and as we are open late we get customer coming in after they have been to grapevine so we trying to cater to the demand, we understand that our bar has reputation and credibility problems but this is not just our bars problem it is a problem with the new town as a whole. It would be easy for us to bury our head in the sand and ignore or accept that but why should we? We don't want that reputation we are trying very hard to change things but it is not easy. Credibility is earned and reputations are built up over time, It also takes time to shed reputations and peoples attitudes are hard to change. We are always trying to move forward and listen to peoples ideas and recently we have had lots of customers asking if we could get some live bands on so again there is a demand that we are trying to fill. The sesh is a great night but the can only showcase a number of bands at any one time, we feel there is room for more nights for people to showcase there talent to a wider range of people giving there existing fans more chance to see them and giving bands their chance to find more fans. As for the stage and P.A yes there will but if I'm honest as we have never put on a night like this before we need to speak to the bands and find out exactly what is needed. Miss Muppet great pic by the way, when does this start that's the question this type of night is a new thing to me so my little black book of bands is not very full at the moment but I have made some contacts and hopefully it won't be long we have plans underway to have a full weekend of daytime live music for Easter bank holiday weekend so hopefully that ill help kick things off and get things going! There are enough people in hull to have a great nightlife every night of the week night Hull needs more choice and diversity so I hope you all reply even if you disagree with what I've said when people get talking about things change happens, ideas come and Hull could do with a bit of that!

| | Posted: Feb 23 2008, 22:18 PM | good positive reply Phill, if I wasn't involved with another venue on a Tuesday night I would have been offering our services, the other venue is very much in the same boat as yourselves with limited experience of live music gigs. Because of this they have come to us with our many contacts in the local scene and experience of running gigs, PA engineering and more and are setting things up right from the beginning in regard to a proper stage being built and inhouse PA system installed.
Hopefully your night will do well as will ours and compliment the Sesh and other regular events in the city, working together is certainly the best thing that can happen and mean the bands, venues and audiences get the best of everything
cheers Darren, Music HQ

| | Posted: Feb 26 2008, 13:47 PM | surely there must be room for more than one or two nights on any given day and if there isn't, the public and the acts will vote with their feet. however, everyone wants to run a live band night (even me!) and the whole thing is on the verge of collapsing in on itself
from a musician's point of view it can be frustrating to get to a gig and find that the stage is tiny or just a corner of the floor, the soundsystem is cheap, and the engineer has no idea about anything. I honestly don't believe there are enough bands, punters or decent sound engineers in this city to support much more of a scene than we already have.
but it's a bit rich to start making snide suggestions about them starting a live night on the same day as an existing regular event. there's only 7 days in the week so it's bound to clash with something whatever night they do it. when the sesh started up, did you hear jacko complaining that the adelphi did live music on a tuesday? well actually you probably did, but that's not the point. the point is that the sesh, however good it is, is not the be-all-and-end-all of live music in hull. (big respect to mak, this not a personal dig in any way )
to dj phil i say good luck. get some decent equipment, it's not worth using crappy gear that sounds poo.

So much so that I may get splinters in my arse from sitting on the fence
A city this size should have choices, its true
But I do also wonder if there are enough bands and gig goers here or are they going to be spreading themselves too thinly, and to the detriment of the overall scene?
I'll be interested to see how it goes and I won't knock anything without trying it
I think we need a few more really good bands and acts coming through though soon, so we're in a position that it won't matter that there are extra nights because they're all catering for genuine demand
A bit of cross venue awareness (and dare I say it co-operation) would be no bad thing too so that they're at least not trying to put the same types of bands on the same night and diluting the potential audience, or sometimes even the same bands in too close succession
I've noticed mak, under the influence and sidekicks lounge stipulate when looking for acts to fill slots that they don't want acts that are already on at one of the other nights within the same couple of weeks, which kind of makes sense
From what I understand the sesh books quite a bit in advance due to the number of acts wanting to play, so from a bands point of view its important to have other places to play so that they can improve what they're doing......as Will says, as long as the venues are up to scratch
Its also good to see some acts looking to get out of hull and on the road more too. Needs to be done if they're going to improve and move on, and acts having success outside of hull in turn reflects well on and helps the local scene
errr, I've gone somewhat off the orignal point now but what the hell

| | Posted: Feb 28 2008, 00:55 AM | we where asked to organise the live music for the new venue before they or myself knew Retro where planning something as well, personally I think there is room for all the nights if they are run well and add something different to the gigging equation.
I don't want to spoil the surprise but the venue is already a pretty cool bar and I think it will be a real winner with the management keen to make sure things are run well and the venue is more than up to scratch.
I can't wait to get going but as we don't want to rush things are waiting for the stage and PA to be installed and up and running to satisfaction before setting any official 'launch' dates.
Quality is the aim as well as being an alternative/addition to what is already out there rather than a copy or rip off, something none of the Music HQ gigs can be accused off I hope
ps the new venue is not just aiming for one night, two other weekly nights are planned and the plan is to make the live events something fresh and exciting covering more than just an indie night.

cetainly not admitting that been to a few gigs there in the past and not one for upstairs venues personally, too many nights lugging amps up and down stairs has put me off that.
